Class of 2012: CH AG BB MC SE TR AB RL Class of 2011: DG MS TN TG SAR TAB CL TR AA JG SA |
This is our first update of 2011! The 7th and 8th grade are a month into the second trimester, and they are engaging in many different topics and projects. This stretch of time is often when we settle into a groove and get a lot accomplished.
In science, both classes have turned their attention towards chemistry. We have discussed atomic structure, the formation of bonds and molecules, the periodic table of elements, acids/bases and the pH scale. The students did basic testing with red cabbage juice indicator to develop a sense of which household items are acids and bases. Currently, we are awaiting the arrival of some digital pH probes to use with the recently purchased Vernier data collection devices so we can collect more accurate data on acids and bases. The students are doing research on an element from the period table and they will be synthesizing the information collected to create a super hero/villain character that will reflect the properties and characteristics of each element. Be on the look out for these in the coming weeks.
Here is a summary of what is happening in math:
Pre-Algebra: The students in this class have just wrapped up working through a unit on ratios and proportions. They explored the many ways we apply the principles of ratios and proportions to the real world such as unit rates, solving problems involving similar polygons, unit conversions in measurement, scale and finding rates of change (irregular and constant rates of change). The coming weeks will be spent reviewing how to work with percents.
Algebra: The last few weeks were focused on introducing how to analyze linear functions. The students have worked heavily with slope, writing and graphing linear equations in standard, slope-intercept and point-slope forms and finding lines that are parallel and perpendicular to existing lines. They have grappled with understanding each format and its usefulness. In addition to all of this, we spent time looking at test-taking strategies, as many of the students prepared for the ISEE test. They all seem to be relieved to be done with the bulk of the high school application process. The upcoming weeks will be spent learning how to solve systems of equations.
Algebra II: The students in this class spent the month of January looking at quadratic and exponential functions. They practiced solving quadratic equations by graphing, factoring, completing the square and using the quadratic equation. The strategy of choice amongst the class was factoring and the quadratic equation. They also enjoyed exploring real-world application of exponential functions such as growth, decay and compound interest. We spent time discussing how these formulas applied to our current world financial situation. It was an engaging discussion. The next few weeks will be focused on radical expressions and triangles.
Check back soon to see what they have posted and shared on their own blogs, about what they are learning.
