As we prepare to head on a break, I thought I would share some of the happenings of the 7th and 8th graders in math and science. Mathematically, we are humming along. Here is a quick summary of what is happening:
Pre-Algebra: The class has just completed a comprehensive review of percentages. They were calculating percents of different amounts, finding discounts, sales tax and tip, working with similar polygons, finding percent of change and worked with simple interest. Next up will be some basic geometry with angles and lines, symmetry and congruency.
Algebra: It has been a challenging time for these students as they wrap their minds around linear functions. They have spent significant time working with the different formats for linear equations and becoming proficient with manipulating these equations. They are in the midst of figuring out how to solve systems of two equations using techniques such as graphing, substitution and elimination. Our next unit will take us to the world of inequalities.
Algebra II: The students in Algebra II spent the past weeks working with radical expression and equations. They worked with square roots, figuring out how to simplify radical equations, solve radical equations and apply them to real-world situations. We have just begun looking at rational expressions and manipulating them with the purpose of simplifying and solving expressions and equations.
In science, both classes have been immersed in various aspects of chemistry. They are about to complete their element super hero/super villain projects, so be on the look out for those appearing on campus and on their blogs. We have also done pH testing with the Vernier LabQuest units and paper chromatography. This week, each class is kicking off their kitchen chemistry studies with a student-planned and prepared lunch. The classes have broken up into groups and each group is making a dish to share with their classmates. The 7th grade has a pasta theme. Each group is making pasta, from scratch, and a sauce. In the 8th grade, each group is making a different main dish: burritos, burgers, pizza and tamales. They are all looking forward to doing the shopping, prepping and cooking. This will lead into classes where they will explore and understand the chemistry behind the work done in a kitchen.
Have a great break!
