Pasta Party
To kick off their study of kitchen chemistry, the 7th grade planned, prepared and enjoyed a pasta lunch on Wednesday. As a class, they decided to make pasta from scratch and a sauce. Each group came up with recipes and we went down to the La Jolla Market to shop for supplies. The menu included linguine with marinara sauce, linguine with alfredo sauce, gnocchi with cheese sauce and cheese tortellini with tomato sauce. They worked all morning preparing their pastas and sauces and then we sat down for lunch of all their hard work.
This was an ambitious project, and as a teacher, I was anxious about how the four groups were going to manage their time, materials and shared work space. It was impressive to see each team work together so efficiently and cooperatively. Sharing one stove top for this project was a challenge, especially at the end when everyone was cooking pasta, but the students were able to negotiate pots and burners without conflict.
As a group, they were not intimidated by the tasks they set out to achieve and they were supportive and appreciative of what each individual accomplished. The satisfaction and delight was shared by all. The food was delicious and we ate until we could not eat anymore!
